Club who are most likely to win the 2024/2025 Champions League following the new format.

Sometime ago the UEFA scrapped the away goals rule which purported that when both teams had the same number of goals after two legs, the team with more goals on away would win via he away goals rule. The new rule was that the team with more goals on both legs would win, and If both teams are level on goals after two legs, there would be extra time and then a penalty shoot out to decide the winner.

We thought that this would be the limit of the modifications to the competition, but UEFA shocked the football world once more by making another modification to the UEFA Champion league, this time a bigger change which would change the whole structure and format of the game.

First, the group stage format where teams were divided into a 8 groups of 4 teams each was scrapped and first added 4 new teams, then put them 4 pots of 9 teams each, who would face 8 teams, 2 from each pot once.

The top 8 teams progress automatically to the round off 16, while the following 16 will compete in the play offs for the remaining 8 spots.
The new UEFA Champions league format is not only much tougher, but also more interesting as it will make the tournament more competitive and interesting. But this means that a lot of teams will find it harder to progress through this new format.

Below, are a list of teams who will find the new format much more easier to deal with.

REAL MADRID

This least cannot be complete without Real Madrid, been the football club with most Champions league trophies in history, with a record 15 titles. This means that they are the club which always has the most probability of winning the competition. But this is not the only reason; the new Champion league format looks like it would favour clubs who are good at playing in a league type format.
But then, Real Madrid are also good at this format as they have won a whooping 36 Laliga titles, this shows that they can grind through the tough format. Their star studded team, including the latest addition of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint German also makes them much more likely to win the league this season.

MANCHESTER CITY

Although the Manchester based club has only 1 Champions league title, they happen to be another favourite for the Champions league trophy under this new format.
The citizens have won 10 premier league titles in their long history, with 6 coming in the past 7 seasons and 4 of those been consecutively. They have also reached 2 Champions league finals in recent years, while winning one.
They also have good team which can bolster their chances of winning the tournament, which includes the likes of Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and the tactical genius of Pep Guardiola which help them grab the trophy this season.

INTER MILAN

Inter Milan are another club that has chances to win the Champions league trophy under the new format. They have won 3 Champions league titles, with the last one been in 2010.
Inter Milan has won 20 league titles in their history. The Italian club has also been very good in the league in the past few years, winning it twice in both the 2020/21 and 2023/24 seasons losing only 3 and 2 games only in respective seasons. They have also come second twice and third once in three out of the past five seasons in which they did not win the league title.
So saying, they have a good chance of winning the Champions league title this season.

BAYERN MUNICH

Bayern Munich have the third most Champions league titles in the history of the competition with 6 titles, only second to AC Milan who has 7 titles and Real Madrid who has 15 of the prestigious title. Their recent Champions league title win was in the 2019/2020 season during the COVID-19 outbreak where they went unbeaten the whole Champions league season.
The Bavarians also have a whooping 33 Bundesliga league titles in the club’s 124 year history, and even though they did not win it last season, they have won it consecutively in the last eleven seasons. They have also started the season strong after signing French winger, Olise to compliment a team that already has the likes of Harry Kane, Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala which will surely help get them this season’s Champions league title.
